    What is Ascorbyl Glucoside?

Ascorbyl glucoside, often called vitamin C glucoside or AA2G, is a stable derivative formed by the combination of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and glucose. It is odorless and stable, unlike vitamin C which is easily oxidized and inactivated by light, heat, and oxygen. In application, it is slowly hydrolyzed by α-glucosidase in the skin or body, gradually releasing bioactive vitamin C, thus exerting a sustained and gentle effect. With its excellent stability and definite effects, it has become a widely used functional ingredient in cosmetics, food, and pharmaceuticals.

What are the effects of ascorbyl glucoside?

Whitening and brightening skin tone: The vitamin C produced by the hydrolysis of ascorbyl glucoside effectively inhibits the activity of tyrosinase, a key enzyme in melanin production, reducing melanin synthesis at its source. Simultaneously, it can reduce existing melanin intermediates, reverse pigmentation, and overall lighten dark spots and brighten skin tone, achieving a significant and highly effective whitening effect.

Powerful Antioxidant: The Vitamin C released by Ascorbyl Glucoside directly neutralizes excess free radicals generated by UV radiation and environmental pollution, reducing oxidative stress damage to skin cells. Ascorbyl Glucoside is therefore an ideal ingredient in sunscreen products, enhancing their UV protection and delaying photoaging.

Anti-wrinkle and Anti-aging: Vitamin C is an indispensable part of collagen synthesis. Ascorbyl Glucoside continuously supplies Vitamin C, promoting collagen synthesis in dermal fibroblasts, thereby enhancing skin elasticity, improving fine lines and wrinkles, combating skin sagging and roughness, and achieving anti-aging.

Gentle and Stable: Compared to Vitamin C and some other derivatives, Ascorbyl Glucoside has excellent chemical and thermal stability, and is not prone to discoloration or degradation. Meanwhile, it has extremely low skin irritation, strong hydrophilicity, and good compatibility, making it suitable for long-term use on all skin types.

    Applications of Ascorbyl Glucoside

High-end Skincare: Ascorbyl Glucoside is widely used in high-efficacy skincare products such as whitening and spot-fading serums, anti-aging creams, antioxidant repair lotions, and sunscreens to achieve skin brightening, spot fading, and firming and anti-wrinkle effects. It is one of the whitening ingredients favored by many well-known skincare brands.

Food and Health Products: As a stable source of Vitamin C and an antioxidant, Ascorbyl Glucoside can also be used in fortified beverages, health foods, and special diets, extending product shelf life while providing continuous antioxidant nutritional support.

Professional Skincare: In some medicated skincare formulations, ascorbyl glucoside is used as an adjunct treatment for pigmentary disorders (such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) and to promote skin wound healing and post-operative repair. Its gentle and stable properties also make it suitable for long-term care.

    Precautions

    1. Recommended Application and Concentration

Main Uses: Ascorbyl Glucoside can be used as a core whitening and antioxidant active ingredient, widely applied in high-efficacy skincare products such as serums, toners, lotions, creams, and masks.

Recommendation: The standard concentration used in the final formulation should generally not exceed 2%. Within this concentration range, it can effectively exert multiple effects such as whitening, anti-oxidation, and promoting collagen synthesis, while ensuring the gentleness of the formula and skin tolerance. The specific concentration needs to be optimized based on product positioning and overall formula synergy.

    2. Formulation Stability Notes

pH Environment: AA2G exhibits good stability over a wide pH range (approximately pH 5-8). To maintain optimal chemical stability, prolonged exposure to extreme acidic or alkaline environments (such as strongly acidic conditions below pH 4 or strongly alkaline conditions above pH 9) should be avoided.

Temperature: AA2G is relatively heat-stable. However, to maximize the protection of its active structure, it is recommended to add it only after the aqueous phase or matrix temperature has cooled to below 40°C to prevent potential hydrolysis or degradation caused by high temperatures.

Compatibility: Ascorbyl Glucoside's good water solubility and hydrophilicity make it compatible with most water-soluble ingredients and natural polymers. However, thorough compatibility testing is still necessary when developing complex formulations.

    3. Storage

Finished products containing AA2G, when stored in a light-protected, sealed, cool, and dry environment, generally maintain long-term stability and are less prone to oxidation, discoloration, or efficacy degradation, thus effectively extending the product's shelf life.
