    Azadirachtin: A Natural Insect Repellent

Azadirachtin is a natural active ingredient extracted from the neem tree (particularly its fruit, seeds, bark, and leaves). A globally recognized and highly effective biopesticide, it possesses broad-spectrum insecticide properties, effectively controlling a variety of agricultural pests and sanitary pests such as mosquitoes and flies. It is also low in toxicity, readily biodegradable, leaves no residue, and is unlikely to induce resistance, making it safe for the ecological environment, humans, and livestock. Furthermore, azadirachtin has shown potential in pharmaceutical applications.

Over 100 compounds have been discovered in neem, with at least 70 exhibiting biological activity. These compounds belong to the diterpenes, triterpenes, pentatriterpenes, and non-terpenoid classes. These compounds, primarily azadirachtin, azadirachtin, and azadirachtin, achieve their insecticidal effects by repelling feeding, interfering with egg laying, disrupting insect metamorphosis, preventing insects from metamorphosing, repelling larvae, and inhibiting their growth. Azadirachtin is the most active compound isolated from neem, belonging to the tetracyclic triterpenoids. Azadirachtin can be divided into eight types: azadirachtin-A, -B, -C, -D, -E, -F, -G, and -I.

    Azadirachtin: Mechanism of Action

Neem is a tree with remarkable insect-resistant properties. Its effectiveness stems from the natural active substance azadirachtin it contains. This discovery stems from a German botanist's observation in India in the 1960s: neem trees were the only ones able to survive a locust plague. Subsequent research confirmed that azadirachtin is responsible for the neem tree's powerful ability to repel and kill pests.

Azadirachtin, extracted from neem fruit, is now recognized as a broad-spectrum, highly effective, low-toxic, easily biodegradable, and residue-free natural insecticide, making it less likely for pests to develop resistance. Tests have shown that it has excellent control effects against over 400 species of agricultural, forestry, storage, and sanitary pests from 10 orders, particularly Lepidoptera and Coleoptera pests, while being safe for the environment, humans, and animals.

Its insecticidal mechanism of action is extremely complex and multifaceted. Rather than rapidly knocking out pests through a single action, it works through a synergistic, multi-system, multi-target approach, impacting pests at multiple levels, from behavior to physiology to genetics, ultimately achieving highly effective and lasting pest control.

Strong Feeding and Growth Inhibition: Azadirachtin significantly reduces insect feeding rates and food conversion and utilization, while inhibiting the activity of midgut digestive enzymes (such as proteases, amylases, and lipases), preventing insects from properly absorbing nutrients.

Endocrine Disruption and Growth and Development: It can affect endocrine organs such as the brain, pharyngeal bodies, and prothoracic glands of insects, disrupting hormonal balance. This can inhibit larval molting and pupal development, leading to developmental deformities or failure to complete the insect's normal life cycle.

Damage to the Reproductive System: Azadirachtin reduces the levels of protein, glycogen, and lipids in female insect reproductive organs, such as the ovaries and oviducts, affecting their egg-laying capacity and egg vitality. Similarly, it adversely affects the reproductive system of male insects, thereby reducing the reproductive capacity of the entire population.

Disruption of Physiological Metabolism and Immune Function: Azadirachtin can reduce the concentrations of trehalose, protein, and metal cations in the insect hemolymph, inhibit the activity of multiple metabolic enzymes, and reduce the DNA and RNA content in the fat body. This comprehensively impacts the insect's energy metabolism, biosynthesis, and immune capacity.

Impact on Respiratory and Systemic Diseases: Azadirachtin disrupts the insect's normal respiratory rhythm and causes pathological changes in multiple vital organs and tissues.

    Azadirachtin: Practical Applications

    Agricultural and Forestry Pest Control

As its most widely used application, azadirachtin has significant effects against hundreds of agricultural and forestry pests, such as aphids, diamondback moths, cotton bollworms, locusts, and longhorn beetles. It works through multiple mechanisms, including feeding repellent, repellent, and growth disruption, making it particularly suitable for organic cultivation and green pest control in cash crops such as vegetables, fruits, and tea.

    Storage and Sanitary Pest Control

During the post-harvest period, azadirachtin effectively protects stored grain and feed, combating storage pests such as grain weevils and moths, and reducing losses. It also has excellent repellent effects against sanitary pests such as mosquitoes, flies, and cockroaches, making it suitable for pest control in homes and public spaces, safeguarding both human and environmental health.

    Gardening and Ecological Maintenance

In landscaping, azadirachtin is used to control pests such as thrips and whiteflies on flowers and lawns, protecting the landscape while avoiding pesticide contamination. Its excellent environmental compatibility allows it to be used in conjunction with various biological control methods to build a sustainable, integrated pest management system.
